The site of the former Rozbark Coalmine

The site of the former Rozbark Coalmine – The revitalised pithead building of the Rozbark Coalmine is used today by Rozbark Bytomski Dance and Movement Theatre. Besides, in the boiler room and machine room of the former Coalmine Rozbark, the Climbing and Strength Sports Centre is going to start its activity soon. Rozbark Mine started to mine coal in 1877 and finished it in 2004. Initially, its owner was a capitalist from Bytom Otto Friedländer and later a company called Spadkobiercy Jerzego Giesche. In the times of the company, at the turn of the 20th century, several buildings were erected which are preserved today. They include the pithead dating back to 1911, boiler plant dating back to 1915 and adjacent machine room of the “Bończyk” shaft dating back to 1907. Those three facilities, including the characteristic retaining wall, were entered in the register of historical monuments of the Voivodeship of Silesia in 2007. The pithead building is the most precious in terms of architecture, beyond any doubt. It was designed by Emil and Georg Zillmann from Charlottenburg. Its “wavy” roof covers the assembly room where the scenes e.g. for the film called “Pearl in the Crown”, directed by Kazimierz Kutz, were shot. Also the machine room of the “Bończyk” shaft is interesting in architectural terms. It is made from clinker brick, with five large window openings with sharp arches.
